History
It was built by Braithwaite, Burn & Jessop Construction. The construction was start in 1936 and was upto 1942 for common people to travel by first on Feb 03, 1943. This bridge bears a daily traffic of 3 Lakh vehicles and 4.5 Lakh pedestrians.
Description
When commissioned in 1943, Howrah was 3rd longest catilever bridge in the world. The bridge deck has longitudinal ruling gradient of 1 in 40 from either end , joined by a vertical curve of radius 4,000 feet. The cross gradient of deck is 1 in 48 between kerbs.
This Bridge is named as Rabindra Setu but still we say Howrah Bridge.
